SUPPORT STATEMENTS FOR NAMING THE MERIDIAN HIGH SCHOOL NORTH GYM

Statement for Diane Axelson Court

Diane Axelson, a retired Meridian Volleyball coach and PE teacher, made an indelible mark on
our school's athletic program during her tenure from 1989 to 2005. Under her leadership, the
Meridian volleyball team secured seven conference championships, six district titles, and
achieved state placement ten times, including clinching one state title. Her remarkable
contributions and dedication to the sport were recognized with her induction into the WIAA
Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame, cementing her legacy as a distinguished and influential figure
in high school athletics. Given her extraordinary achievements and lasting impact on our
community, it would be a fitting tribute to name the North Gym after Diane Axelson, honoring her
legacy and inspiring future generations of athletes.

Statement for Jenn Childress

Jenn Childress, a retired Meridian High School Girls Basketball coach, PE teacher, and
assistant athletic director, made significant contributions to our school's athletic program from
1995 to 2002. Her leadership led the basketball team to win a district title and secure two state
place finishes, including an impressive second-place finish in 2000. Additionally, she was a vital
part of the MHS Volleyball program, serving as an assistant coach during her tenure. Given her
remarkable accomplishments and dedication to Meridian High School, it would be a fitting
tribute to name the North Gym after Jenn Childress, honoring her legacy and inspiring future
generations of athletes and students.

Statement for Ron Vekved

Ron Vekved, a dedicated Meridian community member and longtime fan, left an enduring
legacy through his unwavering support and commitment to our school. Known as a Meridian
Super fan, Ron consistently attended baseball, volleyball, and basketball games, showing his
loyalty and enthusiasm for our teams until his passing in 2023. He was always willing to donate
his time and resources to any Meridian cause, embodying the spirit of the Meridian Trojans.
Naming the North Gym after Ron Vekved would be a heartfelt tribute to his contributions and a
lasting reminder of his dedication to our community.
