BOARD of EDUCATION Boone County Schools suas KIELER PRESIDENT 69 AVENUE B + MADISON, WEST VIRGINIA 25130 CHARLES seen 304-369-3131 BARRY L. BROWN FAX 304-369-6789 MEMBER JAMES A. CRAIG MEMBER DARLENE J. MCCLURE MEMBER MATTHEW R, RIGGS SUPERINTENDENT ANTHONY J. TAGLIENTE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Riggs, Mrs. Boyd, and Board Members | have attached the quotes for the materials | would like to purchase to enhance our current curriculum in both elementary (Horizons) and secondary (Read 180). It has come to my attention that materials for remediation have not been purchased in over seven years, and the special education secondary school's programs are in need of an updated and comprehensive ELA curriculum. Horizons - Elevate and Discovery Teachers requested printed manuals for the Horizons - Discovery program. Due to the number of non-readers in our middle school resource ELA classes additional student transfer books and teacher kits are needed for Horizons - Elevate. Recently a coach from the Horizons program visited our school. Our teachers are excited about this research based program for their students. The coach commented on the enthusiasm our teachers have. I'm requesting these additional materials to keep that momentum, enthusiasm, and excitement going. READ 180 There are two proposals for this program. The first is Digital Renewal July 2024. Those are not due until July, 2024. That is the cost of renewing the 260 licenses for the July 2024-July 2025 date range. The cost is prorated the 45.00/license cost to get us on a July-July billing schedule instead of the BCS renewal coming due in October. The second cost proposal Is for the following: ¢ Gratis/no charge Teacher Licenses and Teacher Materials for the move to ED e 5Classroom Libraries that were requested, Levels B and C to accommodate. * Student workbooks. We may need to tweak this as the year gets started since we do not know where the students may fall when they take that placement test yet—but we did 40% books to represent the code for those students that may need extra foundational skills (they would be placed into this course first in the software and then move to the Real book after completion depending on level and placement upon taking the initial tests when starting the program). And 60% of the workbooks to represent Level B and Level C Real Book for Read 180. e One no-charge 2 hour professional development session; this is virtual. e One PD day was included. Despite the consistent renewal payments made by BCS for 7 years, no new materials have been acquired, and the training for the existing program is outdated. This situation poses a significant challenge to the quality of education we aim to provide to our students. To address this concern and ensure that our secondary schools have the necessary resources for effective remediation, | would like to secure the funds for READ 180. Thank you for considering these purchases. Angel Kennedy Director of Exceptional Children “High Expectations...Every Student, Every Chance, Every Day”
