ATHLETICS AND WELLNESS ESports Pilot Program: Thanks to the support of Mr. Hillman, Mr. Moody, and Mrs. Fennell CTMS has been able to begin an Esports Program. Esports is the fastest growing competitive sport in the nation— offering scholarship opportunities at over 200 colleges/universities. Benefits of Esports include: ¢ Character Development: Students build character and develop discipline, self-esteem, patience and sportsmanship through weekly practice and gameplay. ¢ Community Building: Students will develop a sense of belonging, meet new friends and have school pride by playing on a team with classmates. ¢ Teamwork & Leadership: Students will learn how to communicate better and become leaders as they compete and work together as team. ¢ Strategic Thinking: Students will compete in intense and fast-paced real time strategy games where they will need to fo quickly problem solve and adapt to win — =~ The goal of our program is to establish and grow within our building, z Which will naturally transition into the high schools. Music Program Highlights: Band: 112 students in 3 grade level bands The 7th and 8th grade bands recently attended our annual concert band festival where each band received straight superior ratings from the judges. The 6th grade band and beginning bands are thriving and excited to perform music for our spring concert coming up on May 8th. The jazz band has performed at Willow Tree nursing home and the Eastern Regional Jazz Festival and is planning to attend the Festival of Music is Doswell, VA in May. Over the past year, Mrs. Allen has been securing grant money to purchase steel pans which will allow her to start a Steel Drum ensemble at CTMS. Looking to purchase those pans and start the ensemble in the 2024- 2025 school year. Chorus: 45 students in 3 grade level choirs The choir program at Charles Town Middle School is rebuilding quite nicely following Covid. The total number in all choirs is 48. The students work well together on 2- and 3-part harmony and participate in team building activities and music literacy exercises. In daily class, we also incorporate stretching and warm-ups for vocal health. They perform two concerts a year and try to find other performances opportunities when able. Mrs. Dove is a member of both the West Virginia Music Educators Association and American Choral Director's Association which allows several students the opportunity to perform in state honor ensembles. Mrs. Dove also worked with Mrs. Wildman at Wildwood Middle School to start the All- County Honor Choir back up. More opportunities to plan, brainstorm, and work with the other choir teachers in the county would be very beneficial to her and her students.
