We've held two business partner meetings this year to share the current happenings in our. building and have identified ways for these groups to get involved. We'll continue to host quarterly meetings with these representatives. Book Fair: Offered in the Fall and Spring. Parent volunteers come into the building to help run the event. Movement in Math Parent Night: This program was an after-school club held by Miss Palmer, Mrs. Breeden, and Mr. Anders targeting multiplication and fact fluency for rising 4 and 5" grade students, as these skills are essential for upper elementary and middle school standards. This program was held weekly in the first semester, and concluded with a “Family Fun Day” inviting families to come in and learn the games students had been participating in throughout the semester. Parent Volunteers and Chaperones: Shap ey is fortunate to have fantastic parents who are eager to be involved and help support student success. Parents can eat lunch with their child, participate as a guest speaker/presenter in classrooms, chaperone field trips, and assist/attend school-based events. We have also relaunched our PASS program, giving volunteers an opportunity to support student academics and behavior for at least 30 minutes a week. Career Week: Organized by our school counselor, Career Week opens the door for parents to come into our building and present information about their careers and raise career awareness to our students. Shipley Education Association (SEA): Is our parent teacher organization. Each year they pan fundraising events including our annual Fall Fest, Spring Fling, and different spirit nights at local restaurants. They use these funds to provide materials to support students in the classroom, complete school improvement projects, and contribute to field trip expenses at each grade level. Within the past 3 years the SEA has provided water bottle filling stations and a new swing set on the upper end playground. STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVEMENT Continued focus on West Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports (WVTSS): We continue our focus on consistent and faithful implementation of our WVTSS model to support performance in ELA and Math. Teachers have 30 minutes of designated WVTSS implementation in the master schedule daily to work with students at the targeted and intensive level. We have also purchased DreamBox math to support students performing at/near, above, and below grade level. Classroom teachers screen students 1n the Fall, Winter, and Spring to monitor progress using AimsWeb with a focus on identifying students early to provide intervention supports early. Implementation of CKLA: Based on Science of Reading principles. Primary levels are implementing knowledge and skills daily. Intermediate grade levels implement units of study. Attendance Team: Our attendance team had its’ first meeting in January. This team will work to identify ways to encourage daily attendance and identify different strategies to support chronically absent students. This team recently agreed to update signage throughout the building to promote daily attendance, organize a poster contest promoting the importance of daily attendance, and we have set a monthly daily attendance rate goal of 95%, and if that goal is met all students will be rewarded with a popcorn or popsicle party. Expanded Professional Learning Communities (PLCS): Classroom teachers meet once a month with our assistant principal to receive tools to support Math and ELA instruction. Math Focus: Our teachers prioritize fact fluency and number talks during math instruction. Students understand _ they can solve problems differently but still arrive at the same answer, and teachers encourage students to share their thinking to allow others to hear different ideas of how to solve problems. ATHLETICS AND WELLNESS Counselor Supports: Our school counselor prioritizes body awareness, mindfulness, appropriate interactions with others, and safety during his lessons in classrooms. This year a focus of ours is to work with students on the definition of bullying and the negative impacts of that behavior along with conflict resolution strategies. Our counselor works with teachers to identify students in need of additional supports through K VC therapy services or our student navigator. Our counselor also works with students during lunch, creating lunch groups based of areas of needed support at each grade level. We have also relaunched our PASS program, giving volunteers an opportunity to support student academics and behavior at least 30 minutes per week. Physical Education: Students have 60 minutes of physical education each week providing opportunities for team building and exercise. Trail Time: In addition to 60 minutes of physical education, our students receive an additional 30 minutes of trail time each week. This additional 30 minutes allows students to walk our trail and participate in different outdoor activities as weather permits. Wellness Committee: Meets prior to faculty senate meetings to identify ways to continue to promote student and staff Wellness. } FACILITIES Resurfacing of mulch on playgrounds and trail area CHALLENGES Covering Unfilled Vacancies: We have a wonderful staff that willingly steps up to cover unfilled vacancies. We also recognize this takes away from their instructional planning time. Creativity is key. Intervention: We have one interventionist who focuses on reading support. To help support Math intervention purchased DreamBox math to help support math intervention. We have varying levels of need at each grade level, and our staff is challenged to be creative with how to support these students in alignment with our master schedule. Daily Attendance: We continue to encourage the importance of daily attendance. Our daily attendance rate goal for each month is 95%. To support these goal we are working to identify new and creative ways to support our chronically absent students. These are students missing 10 percent of instructional days (excused or unexcused). Supporting Student Social/Emotional Needs: We have 342 amazing kids, but we also recognize the need for student social/emotional support as it relates to self-care and management along with trauma. Balance: Our staff works extremely hard each day, so we continue to prioritize and work to balance the professional/personal responsibilities. (C}) REQUESTS FOR SUPPORT 1. Dreambox Reading 2. STEAM Equipment for STEAM Space Shared Ownership: Shipley takes a collaborative approach in its’ decision making at the school level. Staff are expected to serve on committees that work to identity areas of growth and provide feedback to guide decision making in regards to planning. Our students also take great ownership in our building, as our student council plans a variety of fundraisers and activities to fund school improvement projects. This group’s recent events include a game night for our K-2 students, a movie night for 3-5 students, and they are also working to fundraise to get a soccer goal and volleyball nets on the playground. Our Shipley Education Association provides a platform for parents to be a part of t the planning of the different events throughout the year, and bring new ideas to the table. Daily Operation and Student Safety: We continue to implement improved arrival and dismissal procedures, and continue to prioritize a clean, organized building filled with Sadent work. Our school has prioritized student safety, estab nue a student led safety pare” and consistent practice/review of safety protocols and procedures. At the beginning of the yer, we partnered with the JCS Sherriff department to have conversations with students at each grade level to discuss the importance of word choice and how our words can make others feel as it relates to threatening language. AU Frogram: This year we have added an AU prccam an sensory space at CWS. We are proud of the collaborative work that went into getting the program set up, and are very pleased with its’ progression to date. Extracurricular Activities; C.W. Shipley is very proud of all the extra-curricular activities provided to help support students academically, showcase student talent, and appeal to student interests. Our staff has put on several programs to support students academically including Movement in Math and Rocking Rangers. Our student council has provided movie nights and game nights for our students, and our Shipley Education Association puts on an annual Fall Fest and Spring Fling. This year we had our second annual Lego Fair to help raise money for the American Heart Association, and we have an upcoming Book Fair and Art Show to showcase student work. This year CWS also had several students place at the Regional Science Fair, with one student moving on to the state fair in Charleston. Character Counts Program: We have relaunched our Character Counts Program based on the 6 pillars of success: Caring, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Citizenship, and Trustworthiness. Students are expected to model these characteristics daily, and we provide daily shouts to students showing examples of these traits. We also give students an opportunity to shop at our Character Counts Shop each marking period if they’ve earned the opportunity. 1 APPRECIATION ¢ Staff: Our staff works incredibly hard each day. We value their work and dedication to our students. ¢ Students: We have 342 amazing students who show up each day with positive attitude and take pride in doing things the right way. ¢ Community: Our parents and business partners are very supportive in everything we do.
