Kalama Elementary School-September 2024 Board Report The beginning of the school year is off to a great start! Classes have settled, relationships are being built, and academics have begun. IReady- We are not one year into the IREADY Foundations reading program. The diagnostic is adaptive but starts the students off at the grade level they are in and adapts to their answers to help find the right level for them to work on their MY Path. Here are links to the last two falls for comparison on how students start the year off. Math Fall 2024 Math Fall 2023 Reading Fall 2024 Reading Fall 2023 Interventions- Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions start on September 23rd. Classrooms/Grade levels will focus on on having at least two days of math intervention a week, supported by Varsity Tutors. We will have four days of Reading intervention, supported by our LAP program. Varsity Tutors- We are partnering with Varsity Tutors to reach more students who may be struggling or need enrichment in Math. Each grade level has four slots to use two days a week to have a 30 minute session with a Varsity Tutor teacher. Varsity Tutors connect with IReady and will give progress monitoring data to our teachers. Here is a little bit more information on Varsity Tutors. Back to School Carnival: Our Back-to-school Carnival was a huge success, thanks to our Kalama PTO! Every person there was happy and excited to be participating. One community member said he didn't hear anyone complaining and loved the number of smiles on kids and students faces! Dr. Benjamin and Mrs. Dolezal got in on the fun by participating in the Pie in your face! Kalama School Garden: The school garden is coming along. A great group of volunteers spent the weekend leveling some ground, moving dirt, and laying a foundation for a greenhouse! We also planted two fruit trees! We are starting to get a little harvest and the classes are having a competition to name our school garden! Here is a photo of our first harvest!
