MERIDIAN SCHOOL DISTRICT #505 REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING MEETING HELD IN PERSON & VIA ZOOM June 12, 2024 REGULAR MEETING The regular meeting was called to order by Board President Steve Corwin at 6:01 p.m. Steve welcomed everyone that was in attendance. Steve Corwin, Jarrod Karuza, Marty Gray, Michelle Simmons, and Jana Haugen were present at the meeting. Student Board Representative Kennedy Brzozowski was present at the meeting. Student Representative Morgan Adams was absent from the meeting. The pledge of allegiance was recited. A motion to adopt the agenda was made by Marty Gray and seconded by Jana Haugen. The motion passed 5-0. CONSENT AGENDA Approval of Meeting Minutes Personnel Report Accounts Payable Payroll 2024-25 Threat Assessment Agreement 2024-25 Mental Health Professional Contract 2024-26 Whatcom County Juvenile Court MOU Whatcom CTE Dual Credit MOU Student Travel -~XTOM™M™VOBPY A motion to adopt the consent agenda was made by Jarrod Karuza and seconded by Michelle Simmons. The motion passed 5-0. RECOGNITION Welcome and Introduce Student Board Representatives Dr. Everett introduced MHS students Kennedy Brzozowski and Logan Ignacio who have been elected by the MHS student body to serve as student board representatives for the 2024-25 school year. REPORTS Meridian Citizens for Education Committee Recommendation Robert Kratzig and Sara Bernardy Co-Chair’s for the Meridian Citizens for Education Committee presented the committee’s recommended projects, associated costs, and $75.00 million bond ask to voters on the November 2024 ballot. Questions should be sent to Meridiancec.com PUBLIC COMMENT Cynthia Ripke Kutsargaitz spoke to recognize the MMS band director and students for the professionalism and respect that they demonstrated while honoring Owen Morton during the Veterans Day Assembly at Green Acres Cemetery and the Farmers Day Parade. OLD BUSINESS Second Review and Approval: Policy 4500 - Unmanned Aircraft System (Drones) Policy 4500 - Unmanned Aircraft System (Drones) was presented to the Board for a second review and approval. Student favors approval. A motion to approve Policy 4500 - Unmanned Aircraft System (Drones) as presented was made by Marty Gray and seconded by Jarrod Karuza. The motion passed 5-0. Second Review and Approval: Policy and Procedure 6700 - Nutrition Policy and Procedure 6700 — Nutrition was presented to the Board for a second review and approval. Student favors approval. A motion to approve Policy and Procedure 6700 — Nutrition as presented was made by Michelle Simmons and seconded by Jana Haugen. The motion passed 5-0. Second Review and Approval: Policy and Procedure 6702 - Wellness Policy and Procedure 6702 — Wellness was presented to the Board for a second review and approval. Student favors approval. A motion to approve Policy and Procedure 6702 — Wellness as presented was made by Jana Haugen and seconded by Marty Gray. The motion passed 5-0. First Reading: Policy and Procedure 6703 - Recess and Physical Activity Policy and Procedure 6703 - Recess and Physical Activity was presented to the Board for a second review and approval. Student favors approval. A motion to adopt Policy and Procedure 6703 - Recess and Physical Activity as presented was made by Jarrod Karuza and seconded by Jana Haugen. The motion passed 5-0. NEW BUSINESS First Review: Facility Naming and Dedication Committee Recommendation On behalf of the facilities naming and dedication committee, Bryant Michaelson presented three names submitted and corresponding statements to be considered in naming the North Gym at Meridian High School. This will be brought back with a final name recommendation and motion to approve at the June 26, 2024, meeting. First Review: General Obligations Bond Resolution 06-24 Dr. Everett presented General Obligation Bonds Resolution 06-24 to the Board for a first review. This will be brought back to the Board for a second review and approval at the June 26, 2024, Board meeting. First Review: Reduction in Force Resolution 07-24 Dr. Everett presented Reduction in Force Resolution 07-24 to the Board for a first review. This will be brought back to the Board for a second review and approval at the June 26, 2024, Board meeting. First Review: MAT MOU Dr. Everett presented a MAT Furlough MOU to the Board for a first review. This will be brought back to the Board for a second review and approval at the June 26, 2024, Board meeting. FINANCE REPORT Finance Report Director of Finance, Daniel Yorton along with Kurt Harvill and Dr. Everett presented a detailed budget update report to the Board. The budgeted enrollment, general fund update, fund balance breakdown, and revenue summary were share. An overview of the budgeting teams process, goals, and strategies used to create a budget for the 2024-25 school year were also shared in addition to the F-195 report and the four-year projected budget. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT Dr. Everett began his report by sharing details about the high school and beyond refresh plan, WASA Region 108 recognition banquet, and Rep. Rule’s recent visit to IRE. Information about recent events, and activities Dr. Everett has been engaged in outside and within our schools as well as upcoming dates of importance were also shared. INFORMATION FROM STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVES There was no information shared. INFORMATION FROM BOARD DIRECTORS Kindergarten graduations are Friday, June 14 from 11:00 am until 2:30 pm. Eighth grade promotion will be Monday, June 17 at 9:30 am.
