fe Elkins High School

Mrs. Schmidlen,

We are requesting permission to attend the 2024 Southera Regional Education Board Making
Schools Work Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, from July 9-12, 2024. The cost of the
conference will be covered by SREB Grant Funds.

At the conference, Shana Parlock, Samantha Phipps, and Andrew Carroll will lead a session
titled “Igniting Student Experience: Schoolwide Advisory Redesign.” In the interactive session,
the trio of teachers from Elkins High School will share their experience redesigning a schoolwide
system of support that includes advising; social and emotional learning; targeted interventions
and enrichment; and opportunities to explore careers and community connections.

Sharing our successes and failures with a larger network of like-minded colleagues provides us
with a critical opportunity to create benefits for the school and ourselves as professionals. For the
school, it provides us the opportunity to celebrate and improve our efforts. Professionally, it
allows us to grow our network, expand our skills, and grow as teacher-researches.

Susan Guillembet will join Shana, Samantha, and Andrew in attending the conference. This is a
critical experience for an early career teacher like Susan, who is enthusiastic about improving her
teaching practices and engaging in school improvement projects, It is also essential for
mid-career teachers who are focused on improving their professional practices.

This school year, these four individuals have earnestly participated in the WV High Schools that
Work working group. They see this conference as an opportunity to grow and expand their
efforts to improve Elkins High School.

Best,

Elkins High School, High Schools That Works Committee
