1. Opening of Meeting

A. Call to Order
The Wood County Board of Education met on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at Jefferson
Elementary Center, 1103 Plum Street, Parkersburg, WV and via You Tube. President
Raber called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm and Superintendent Christie Willis recorded
the minutes.

B. Moment of Silence/Pledge of Allegiance
A moment of silence was held, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

C. Roll Call

The following board members were present: Justin Raber, Judy Johnson, Ron Tice,
Debbie Hendershot and Randy Modesitt.

A quorum was established.
2. Presentations/Reports
A. Recognition of Wood County Honor Choir Members

Superintendent Willis and Ashlee Beatty, Director of Curriculum & Instruction,
recognized students from Blennerhassett Middle, Edison Middle, Hamilton
Middle, Jackson Middle, VanDevender Middle and Williamstown Middle
Schools and presented them with certificates.

B. Recognition of West Virginia American Choral Director’s Association 7-9
All-State Choir

Superintendent Willis and Ashlee Beatty, Director of Curriculum & Instruction,
recognized students from Edison Middle and Parkersburg South High Schools and
presented them with certificates.

C. Recognition of West Virginia American Choral Director’s Association All-State
Chamber Choir

Superintendent Willis and Ashlee Beatty, Director of Curriculum & Instruction,
recognized students from Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South High Schools
and presented them with certificates.

D. Recognition of National American Choral Director’s Association Honor Choir
Superintendent Willis and Ashlee Beatty, Director of Curriculum & Instruction,
recognized students from Parkersburg South High School and presented them with
certificates.

E. Recognition of West Virginia Music Education Association All-State Honor Choir
Superintendent Willis and Ashlee Beatty, Director of Curriculum & Instruction,

recognized students from Parkersburg South High School and presented them with
certificates.


F. Recognition of West Virginia Music Education Association All-State Chorus

Superintendent Willis and Ashlee Beatty, Director of Curriculum & Instruction,
recognized students from Edison Middle, Hamilton Middle, Parkersburg High and
Parkersburg South High Schools and presented them with certificates.

G. Recognition of Solo and Ensemble Superior Rating

Superintendent Willis and Ashlee Beatty, Director of Curriculum & Instruction,
recognized students from Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South High Schools
and presented them with certificates.

H. UnPuzzled Parents Connect by Whitney Price, Founder

Whitney Price, founder of UnPuzzled Parents Connect, a support group for parents
and families of children with special needs, shared information about a grant she
received. Some of the programs they offer are support groups, group training, and
therapy and counseling services.

I. Transportation Updates by Chad Bloss, Director of Transportation, Pam Reynolds,
Assistant Director, and Jimmy Stewart and Eric Murphy, Technology and
Integration Specialists
Chad Bloss, Director of Transportation, and Jimmy Stewart, Technology and Integration
Specialist, were absent. Pam Reynolds, Assistant Director of Transportation, provided a
Transportation update. Eric Murphy, Technology and Integration Specialist, provided a
website/Rooms update, regarding Transportation.

J. Open Enrollment for Employees’ Insurance by Carly Maze, Employee Benefits
and Insurance Coordinator

Carly Maze, Employee Benefits and Insurance Coordinator, provided an update, regarding
Open Enrollment/changes, price increases, etc.

K. Summer School 2025 by Ashlee Beatty and Candace Lewis, Directors of
Curriculum & Instruction

Ashlee Beatty and Candace Lewis, Directors of Curriculum & Instruction, provided
a Summer School 2025 update.

L. Bond Update by Kaleb Lawrence, Assistant Superintendent of Operations

Kaleb Lawrence, Assistant Superintendent of Operations, provided a Bond update
on current projects.

Superintendent Willis gave updates on the following items:
e Thanked everyone for their efforts, as the work that is going on across the school system

is unbelievable. It has been an amazing group effort. Everyone has gone above and
beyond.

A. Unpaid Suspension of employee Bendi Tucker
Justin Raber moved and it was seconded by Debbie Hendershot to ratify Superintendent’s
recommendation of unpaid suspension of employee Bendi Tucker, beginning
March 15, 2025, until the final disposition of charges are rendered.
The motion passed unanimously.

B. Appoint William David Canterbury as Director of Facilities
Justin Raber moved and it was seconded by Judy Johnson to approve the appointment
of William David Canterbury as Director of Facilities for Wood County Schools,
effective April 28, 2025.
The motion passed 4-1.

C. Interviews for the Appointment to the Wood County Recreation Commission
Interviews were held during Executive Session.

D. Board of Education Appointment to Wood County Recreation Commission

Justin Raber moved and it was seconded by Judy Johnson to approve the appointment
of Ponnie Piggott-Sampson to the Wood County Recreation Commission.

The motion passed 3-2.

e Debbie Hendershot — thanked the Choir students and teachers for all of their hard
work; thanked Superintendent Willis for starting the recognitions; thanked everyone
with a presentation, as it is very informative.

e Judy Johnson — enjoyed the student recognitions; thanked Kaleb Lawrence for the
detailed report on the Bond projects; thanked Kaylee Litman for her time and work.

e Randy Modesitt — everyone has been an inspiration — being a part of Wood County
Schools has been a very positive experience and look forward to continuing to work
with the system.

e Ron Tice — echoed the other Board Member comments about the good things
happening in Wood County Schools; thanked Mr. Bloss and Ms. Reynolds for all of
their work with the bus routes; look forward to speaking with Carly Maze regarding
all of the changes with PEJA; appreciate the Summer School update.
