WOOD COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION

5111 - Entrance Age and Conditions; Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Grade

Enrollment/Entrance Age for Pre-Kindergarten (4-year olds)

Regular-education-Pre-Kindergarten enrollment is voluntary and available to any child who will be 4 years of age
prior to July 1 of the current year. Students may enroll at any Wood County Elementary school which has a Pre-
K program. Immunization requirements must be met prior to the first day of attendance. Available county Pre-K
programs are filled by a committee with great consideration given to the date and time the application was
received, with the proper documentation. Additionally, students returning for a second year of Pre-Kindergarten
and students with an IEP (Individual Education Plan) will be placed first.

Entrance Age for Kindergarten and First Grade

Any child enrolling in Wood County Schools for the first time must be five years of age priorto July 1 to enter
kindergarten and six years of age prior to July 1 to enter first grade.

Conditions for Entrance into First Grade

A child must have successfully completed a public or privately supported state-approved kindergarten or
Montessori kindergarten program or have successfully completed an entrance test of basic readiness skills
approved by the county prior to entering first grade. Such entrancetest may be administered in lieu of
kindergarten attendance only under extraordinary circumstances. An extraordinary circumstance will be
considered to exist when a child is old enough to be in first grade; but for aygood cause did not complete an
approved kindergarten program.

Early Entrance into Kindergarten

Beginning the 2025-2026 school year, a child who will be five years of age between July 1 and September.
August 15 of the current school year will be permitted to attend kindergarten if the child has demonstrated
sufficient mental and physical competency forsuch entrance.

A parent who wishes to request such advanced entrance for a child must contact the principal of the school the
child would attend prior to the-beginning-ef the-schoeltierm June | to arrange for an evaluation through Wood
County Schools Office of Special Education. The evaluation will be used to help determine if the child has the
necessary competency for entrance or placement into kindergarten. The kindergarten application will be held,
and the child will not be enrolled until the student has passed the early-entry exam. Parents are encouraged to
secure a spot.in a desired Pre-K while waiting on testing results in case the student does not pass the early-entrance
exam.

Early Entrance into First Grade

A child who will be six years of age between July 1 and Septeraber34+ August 15 and who has successfully
completed a public or privately supported state-approved kindergarten or Montessori kindergarten program will
be permitted to attend first grade.
